FAQ

Can't find your question? Ask on the SpigotMC page.

Is Counter free?

Yes. Counter is free on Modrinth and SpigotMC.

Which servers and versions does it run on?

Spigot, Paper, Purpur and Folia on Minecraft 1.20 up to 26.x. Your server needs Java 21 and the latest PacketEvents.

Will it ban legit players?

Counter is built to avoid it, but no anti-cheat is perfect. Out of the box, 68 checks punish, 46 only alert and 1 is off. Newer parts of some checks also stay alert only until you take them off the watch list.

The safest start is to watch alerts for a few days, set alert-only: true on anything you don't trust yet, then run /counter tune.

How much does it catch?

Counter doesn't publish catch rates. Cheat clients update every week and every server is different, so any percentage would be made up or out of date fast.

The checks page lists every check, what it catches and whether it punishes out of the box.

Does it work with Bedrock players?

Yes, through Geyser and Floodgate. Checks that don't suit touch controls skip Bedrock players on their own, and fake Bedrock IDs don't get that pass.

Does it work with ViaVersion and older clients?

Yes. Each client gets the physics of its own version.

For 1.8 and 1.9 to 1.16 players, some tick checks need handle-pings-as-inv-acknowledgements: true in the ViaBackwards config. If ViaVersion runs on your proxy, keep post_tick and multi out of the AuraB proof list. They're off by default.

Does it work on a BungeeCord or Velocity network?

Yes. Turn on network on every backend and they link through Redis or plugin messaging. Staff see alerts from every server, and violations follow players between servers. See networks in the setup guide.

Will it lag my server?

Counter is built to stay light, and spectators skip the physics engine. If it ever shows up in your timings, run /counter dump and include the file when you report it.

How do I report a false flag or a bug?

Run /counter dump. It writes a support file with your setup. Post it on the SpigotMC page with what the player was doing when they got flagged.

Can it stop x-ray and ESP?

XRayA flags players who find ore veins too often for the stone they mine, and bait chests catch ESP and x-ray users who dig straight to them.

The base shield goes further. It hides bases and players that someone couldn't see from where they stand, so ESP has nothing to show. It's off by default, so test it first. For ores, keep Paper anti-xray or Orebfuscator running alongside it.

Can I turn checks off in some worlds?

Yes. /counter world sets checks to off or alert only for a world, and /counter region does the same for a WorldGuard region.

Where is my data stored?

Violations and flag history are kept in SQLite out of the box. MySQL and MariaDB work too, see storage.

Can I change the messages or language?

Every message lives in the language files, and 10 languages are included. Each staff member can pick their own with /counter lang.

Is there an API?

Yes. Other plugins can read and reset violation levels, check a player's client, ping and Bedrock status, and listen to FlagEvent, PunishEvent and SetbackEvent. All three can be cancelled. PlaceholderAPI placeholders are included too, see placeholders.

Do I need to redo my config after updating?

No. New settings are added to your config on its own when you update.
